Today, May 8, 2022, President Zuzana Chaputova marked the 77th anniversary of the end of World War II and Victory Day over fascism by laying wreaths at the cemeteries in Zvolen, where fallen Soviet and Romanian soldiers are buried.
Today we are remembering a past event, but we are remembering it in the very specific current context of the military conflict that is taking place in neighboring Ukraine. This fact should remind us that the world is not taken for granted. This was announced on Sunday by the President of the Slovak Republic, Zuzana Caputova, at the military cemetery in Zvolen on the occasion of the 77th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.
“Paying tribute to the soldiers of the Soviet army, who deserved our liberation, cannot be seen as legitimizing the war in Ukraine. I would even say that this is a betrayal of all the victims who fought against real and imaginary fascism, ”said Chaputova.
The President celebrated Victory Day over fascism and the 77th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe by laying a wreath at the Memorial of the 2nd Czechoslovak Airborne Brigade in Badin, as well as by laying wreaths at the Cemetery of the Fallen Soldiers of the Soviet Army and at the central military cemetery of the Central Romanian army.
More than 17,600 soldiers of the Soviet Red Army and more than 10,300 soldiers of the Royal Romanian Army, who died during the liberation of our territory in 1944-1945, are buried at the central military cemetery of Zvolen. The cemeteries of the fallen Soviet and Romanian soldiers are national cultural monuments of the Slovak Republic.
