On 6 June, we celebrate the 224 anniversary of the birth of Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin. Pushkin Day is commemorated annually in Russia and is the International Russian Language Day. According to UN data, approximately 250 million people on the planet speak Russian. On June 6, on the day of the great Russian poet's birth, the Russian Language Day is held at the UN headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, in an online format. The annual commemoration is part of a programme to promote and develop multilingualism and cultural diversity.
One of the tasks of this programme is to promote the equality of all six official languages of the United Nations, namely Russian, English, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese and French.
The online marathon will include performances of theatre and concert groups, and students will recite excerpts from their favourite Pushkin works.
The Russian Language Day will be broadcast via various UN information sources and platforms. The online marathon will be available to watch from 15:00 European time at this link: https://viar.media/Den-russkogo-yazyka_v5718.
