Hiroshima Memorial Day or why Hiroshima and Nagasaki should be remembered

On August 6, the whole world remembers the victims of the atomic bombing in Hiroshima. 78 years ago, the Americans dropped an atomic bomb called Little Boy on this city. Hiroshima was destroyed. Approximately 80,000 residents died immediately in the attack, and tens of thousands more gradually died in the hospital from the effects of radiation. It was the first nuclear attack on humanity. Three days later, on August 9, 1945, American bombers with the giant Fat Man headed for another Japanese city – Nagasaki. Under the atomic mushroom cloud, more than 75,000 human lives were lost in the attack itself. Later, however, another 35,000 people died from radiation and injuries. To date, the number of victims has risen to 350,000.

The theme of the origins of nuclear weapons is also reflected in the world-renowned film Oppenheimer. It is currently the number one in Slovak cinemas. He also points to the fact that the scientists, who were at the birth of this destructive weapon, were aware that their discovery could have destructive consequences.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki have become not only symbols of the atomic tragedy but also of the fight against nuclear threats. The multitude of memorials and memoirs of fallen victims sends a message to all humanity on this Earth: People, Hiroshima must not be repeated! Be reasonable!
