Constitution Day is a national holiday and an official day off in Slovakia. On 31 August 1992, the Slovak Parliament considered a bill of the country's basic law and made some adjustments. On 1 September, an open vote was held on the final version of the Constitution. On the same day, parliamentarians approved the bill by a majority vote. Since then, Slovakia Constitution Day has been celebrated on 1 September, although the Constitution itself came into force a month later.
The holiday is accompanied by solemn events at the state level. The Government presents high honours to prominent political and public figures. On Constitution Day, mass festivals and other cultural events are organised in Slovak cities. An exhibition of handicrafts is held at Bratislava Castle, where souvenirs and other interesting products made by Slovak craftsmen are widely presented. All kinds of festivals and concerts take place in the city's central squares. The cultural programme of Constitution Day is rich and diverse and includes events for children.
