The International Day of Families is celebrated annually on 15 May in accordance with the resolution of the UN General Assembly to strengthen the role of the family and draw public attention to the protection of family values.
On this day, events are held all over the world at national and regional level: festivals, thematic conferences, awareness-raising events, charity events, competitions, workshops on child-raising, flash mobs, round table discussions, as well as health-improving activities. Family picnics were organised to support families in need.
In Slovakia, the International Day of Families was marked by rich programme of events. Children's festivals with contests and gifts were held in town and village squares, family centres and schools held educational events on the importance of the family in the life of each individual and in the society. The media published thematic programmes and publications, including a message from the Secretary-General of the United Nations on the theme of the holiday. The theme of the International Day of Families in 2024 is ‘Family Well-being and Climate Change’.
