On May 8 and 9, 2020, celebrations were held in Slovakia. They were dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory over fascism.
The official ceremony took place on May 8 at the military cemetery Hai-Nikovo in Liptovsky Mikulash. President Zuzana Chaputova, Prime Minister Igor Matovich and Chairman of the National Council Boris Kollar laid wreaths on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II and the victory over fascism.
“Slovakia was liberated by Red Army and this should be clear to everyone. A people who do not remember their own past cannot have a future, ”said Parliament Speaker Boris Collard in his speech.
Despite quarantine restrictions, on May 9, a mass ceremony took place at the Slavin Memorial Complex in Bratislava. By tradition, flowers and wreaths were laid to the monument to the Soviet soldier-liberator. 6845 soldiers of the Red Army are buried in Slavin.
The ceremony was attended by Slovak veterans, youth, members of the historical club, the international biker club Night Wolves, compatriots. In their hands they had flags of Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Russia and the main flag - a copy of the Victory flag. Many had ribbons of St. George on their chests. Compatriots carried portraits of their fathers and grandfathers who participated in the war.
The Russian center of the European Foundation of Slavic Literature and Culture in Bratislava also attended the ceremony. Commemorative events took place throughout Slovakia in various cities and towns.
